Independent Reading

Independent reading is a requirement of English 1 and 2. Each student is expected to have a book of their choosing with them during every class. By the end of each marking period, students are expected to submit a write-up of their independent reading book. The Independent Reading response assignment can be downloaded as a PDF.

Due Dates

Your independent reading responses are due on the following dates:

  • M1: Fri., November 4, 2016
  • M2: Fri., January 20, 2017
  • M3: Fri., March 31, 2017
  • M4: Fri., June 9, 2017

Your response must be at least 1 page, typed. Please use a 12-point standard font such as Arial, Helvetica, Times New Roman, etc., double-spaced, 1” margins. Please share a copy of your paper with me from your school account on Google Docs (


Ensure your paper includes the following:

  • Your Name
  • Title of the Book/Story
  • Author(s)
  • Number of pages
  • Date of Publication
  • Genre
For Fiction Books

Choose one of the following prompts:

  1. Choose one character from the book and describe one of their major character traits. Identify at least two events from the story and explain how they impacted the development of this character trait.
  2. Choose one event in the story that you didn’t like. How might you have changed it? Summarize your new idea for the story and describe how it would affect the plot.
For Non-Fiction Books

Choose one of the following prompts:

  1. What do you think is the most important thing the author wanted you to learn while reading the book? Explain using evidence from the book.
  2. Describe at least two new insights or understandings you have after reading the book. Use specific examples from the book in your response.
